BHS Discusses: Class Colors

This question has been argued on social media and in classrooms for YEARS, whether or not you attend BHS. Every year, it’s customary to associate a particular color folder or notebook with a particular class when back-to-school shopping.

But here’s where some debate comes in; Do you think of math as red or blue? Do you think of English as yellow or red? Do you think Science is green or purple, etc.

The Eagle’s Cry created a poll and formally got some students’ opinions on this topic. You’d be shocked by how much of a debate this is…

Math is usually red… right?? From a Google Form I sent to Bethpage students, 71.4% agree, and believe that math is red. But the other 28.6% say that math relates to blue more. BHS junior, Olivia Greenfield agrees with the 28.6% “blue”  and explains that she chose blue because it “is the best color and math is the best subject”.

I’ve always connected English to the color yellow, but other BHS students disagree. With a staggering 71.4% of respondents agreeing with me that English is yellow (once more). The remaining 14.3% chose pink, while the remaining 14.3% chose “no color at all.” Giselle D’Aleo, a junior at BHS, had a special explanation for why she thought English was pink. She added that because English is her “second language” and pink is her “second favorite color,” she connects it to the color.

Moving on to social studies, I’ve always associated this particular course with blue, and again, 71.3% of respondents agree. Red and yellow were the next colors, tied at 14.3%. Emma Krittman, a junior at BHS, expressed a fascinating take on the matter when she said, “The psychological aspect of this is crazy. While I originally thought purple, I heard a lot of people thought it was blue and it eventually caused me to second guess myself in the end.”

Now for science, I always thought that EVERYONE thought Science was green. Turns out, a whopping 85.7% of students that replied to the poll agree. But, 14.3% disagreed and said that orange came to mind when thinking about Science. BHS junior, Abby O’Hara, agreed with me and said “green, duhh”.

Our final point is: which color should language-related courses (such as Spanish, Italian, or French) be? In the end, 57.1% chose purple, 28.6% chose orange, and 14.3% chose yellow. Personally, I think that using purple or pink—really, whatever folder I have left—would help the results make sense.
