On October 20th at 8 o’clock, the New York Liberty matched up against the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA finals at Barclays Center. This five game series has not been predictable considering New York won the first and third games and Minnesota took games two and four. There were mixed reviews about who would take this championship game.
It was not shocking to see either of these teams in the playoffs this year. The Liberty were in first place throughout the whole regular season, and the Lynx remained in a close second. Star players such as Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu lead New York in scoring throughout the season, and Napheesa Collier, the defensive player of the year, lead Minnesota
Although many students have not been keeping up with the WNBA regular season games, a lot of people tuned in to watch the championship. The Eagle’s Cry interviewed 2 seniors at BHS on their opinion about the final game.
TEC: Who did you want to win the WNBA championship?
Samantha Cossaro and Julia Coscino both answered with the New York Liberty.
TEC: Why do you want New York to win?
Samantha Cossaro: Even though I don’t watch the WNBA often , a lot of people who I am close with were rooting for Liberty, so I wanted them to win too.
Julia Coscino: I wanted them to win because that is where I’m from, and it is nice to have New York win any championship
TEC: Do you think The Liberty deserved this win? Why?
Samantha Cossaro: Yes, because they were down going into halftime but didn’t give up.
Julia Coscino: Yes, because they played a lot better than the LYNX in overtime when it really mattered.
Overall, many BHS students agree with the majority: The Liberty deserved the title of WNBA Champions.
