Every season tells a story, and this year’s Bethpage boys’ lacrosse season was no exception. Through tough competition, exciting victories, and valuable lessons learned along the way, the Golden Eagles continued to grow both on and off the field. This season was a rollercoaster, but no matter the record the guys on the team made this season something special. This season was led by Senior Captains Joe Traversa, James Lipetri, Luke Waxer, and Chase Solliday.
To start the year off, Bethpage won their first two games to North Shore and Portledge by scores of 15-0 and 7-6. James Lipetri led the way with a combined five goals through those games. Later in the year, the squad suffered through some tough losses but came back winning a couple tough games from Plainedge, Calhoun, and Long Beach. Facing fourth-seeded Long Beach was a game Bethpage (third-seeded) was waiting for all year. Bethpage was looking to prove they belonged at the top of Class B. They won this game 8-7. The key performers in this game were Colin Waxer and Chase Solliday each with a goal and two assists. Joe Traversa nabbed 11 saves.
Toward the end of the year, Coach Gorman said, “We need to be playing our best by the end of May.” The team proved up to that challenge with a huge overtime playoff win over MacArthur. Alex Newman scored a go-ahead goal with 57 seconds left in overtime. Charlie Abramo and Liam Farrell both scored two goals, and Joe Traversa made 13 saves.
Now, Bethpage would face mighty Manhasset on Hofsta turf and look to make the County Championship.
Unfortunately, Bethpage ended its season at Hofstra with a final record of 9-7. They fought through injuries of key players but ended the season just short with a loss to Manhasset by a score of 11-1.
Bethpage boys lacrosse should be proud of their accomplishments and for those senior captains, they made it to Hofstra three out of their four years of high school. This season’s story has now ended, but the lessons they learned will stay with them forever.
