Hot take: Mrs. Comunale is the most underrated social studies teacher at Bethpage High School.
Let’s get to the details. Mrs. Comunale teaches Global History I and II with freshman and sophomore students. She has been working at BHS for 26 years.
When asked about what she loves at BHS, Mrs. Comunale explained, ‘’Bethpage has been a great place to work. Watching my students grow academically and personally has been very rewarding. The positive atmosphere, inclusive environment and strong sense of community create a culture where everyone supports one another. I have made some amazing friends at BHS over the past 26 years as well.’’
All of my life I disliked and was uninterested with Social Studies. Mrs. Comunale turned my dislike into her goal to make me love social studies by the end of the year. She 100% changed my view of social studies and now it’s a class I look forward to.
Everyday she welcomes her students into the classroom standing outside with a smile on her face. Mrs. Comunale brings positive energy and jokes into the classroom leaving students enjoying class time.
Mrs. Comunale has made such a positive impact on students’ lives that they pray to get her for two years in a row. Furthermore, unlike most teachers, Mrs. Comunale has a different view on homework.
She shared,’’ I don’t assign a lot of homework. Students typically have one assignment per week that reinforces concepts taught in class. I value quality over quantity when it comes to homework assignments.’’
When asked about how she runs her class, she stated, ‘’I incorporate a variety of activities throughout the class period to keep students actively engaged in learning. I use short video clips, guided notes, readings, Chromebook-based tasks, and cooperative learning activities. I also enjoy giving students opportunities to express their creativity through projects.’’
Mrs. Comunale was also asked what her goal is when teaching her students, she responded with,’’ I want my students not only to understand the content and make meaningful historical connections, but also to learn in a positive environment where they feel respected, valued and comfortable sharing their ideas. Having a few laughs never hurts either!’’
To conclude, Mrs. Comunale is a one of a kind teacher who incoming students will hopefully be lucky enough to have the honor of having her as their teacher.
