This spring is surely a significant time for fashion lovers. Of course, the Met Gala is in May, and now, The Devil Wears Prada 2 movie released on May 1st, just around the same time! On Monday, April 20th, The Devil Wears Prada 2 premiere took place at Lincoln Center, NYC; the perfect spot for this particular premiere; a fashion capital, and clearly Miranda Priesely’s fashion world! Before the film hits the big screens and every scene and every outfit is featured all throughout your Instagram and Tiktok feed, the stars, including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt, as well as the new actors featured on the show, stepped out on the red carpet, not only making statements as part of the show, but making huge fashion statements as well. While fashion is surely thought of for any movie premiere, what is worn to the The Devil Wears Prada premiere is one of the most important, if not the most important part of the event. We expected bold statement pieces, pops of red, sleek suits, elegant gowns. This was certainly delivered.
Before the main four arrived, the new stars of The Devil Wears Prada 2 told the press a bit more about their characters and roles in the movie. These include Kenneth Branagh, who plays Stuart–Miranda Prestly’s new husband–, Simone Ashley who portrays Miranda’s new assistant Amari as well as Justin Theroux, who plays Emily’s new boyfriend Benji Barnes, Lucy Liu as Sasha Barnes along with Caleb Hearon who plays Miranda’s other assistant, Charlie. Many of these new additions to the movie, more specifically the younger actors , explain how their characters bring a sense of the millennial generations to the fashion world under Miranda Priestley and show fans how the fashion world has evolved since The Devil Wears Prada in 2006 through the influence of newer generations. These cast members, along with many other attendees of the premiere, surely dressed to the nines and incorporated factors of The Devil Wears Prada into their outfits. Some had pops of Cerulean Blue, Prada-branded accessories or suits/dresses, and of course mixes of reds and blacks to give that high-fashion, powerful and devilish feel.
Soon after, the moment everyone was waiting for stepped onto the red carpet. Meryl Streep was the first to arrive, along with Stanley Tucci. Meryl Streep, our iconic Miranda Priesely and Anna Wintour’s “double” stepped out in a striking, ravishing red Givenchy caped gown, black leather, opera gloves and bold Stuart Weizman pointed-toe black stiletto boots, along with black Givenchy sunglasses. She undoubtedly looked like the more powerfully stylish devil you’d see in your nightmares, or perhaps in front of your desk at Runway magazine. Even when being interviewed by reporters during the premiere, she seemed to keep her Miranda Priestly character in tack. Meryl Streep is typically known to be a really fun, and definitely less up-tight person than her character, Miranda. She seemed very poised and empowering during her interviews.
Stanley Tucci, Nigel Kipling in The Devil Wears Prada stepped out along with Meryl looking effortlessly chic and cool. He wore a sleek Giorgio Armani black blazer paired with charcoal grey trousers. Along with sleek black sunglasses. His outfit not only reflected the style of Nigel, but Tucci’s own style as well. In general, Stanley Tucci has a very similar style to his character Nigel, and has recently reported that he feels he relates to this character the most. When asked which character of his is most like him in real life, Tucci enthusiastically answered, “Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada! He’s very stylish, and he can be a bit caustic . But he’s got a good heart.”
After Tucci and Streep made their entrances, Anna Hathaway (Andrea Sachs) and Emily Blunt (Emily Charlton) stepped out looking perfectly, and effortlessly elegant! Hathaway wore a bold red strapless satin Louis Vuitton gown with a statement corseted bodice and a sweet heart neckline. The dress executed “high fashion” in every way possible. She paired this with matching bold red heels and a set of Bulgari jewelry. Although Andy Sachs may not be the actual devil of the film –even though some say she is– this look definitely fits the part!
Emily Blunt stepped out looking like an angel rather than a devil. She wore a dramatic, yet graceful Schiaparelli Haute Couture dress that was adorned with over 25,000 silk feathers. She paired this with pearl jewelry, and a statement piece of her dress was a circular feather piece at her chest. She was covered in feathers in the most high class, fashionable way. I guess this means that Emily Charlton is not the “devil” in this movie!
If you are a big fan of The Devil Wears Prada, you probably know the inspiration behind the magnificent fashion movie is the one and only Anna Wintour, who Miranda Priestly would resemble. The Devil Wears Prada was originally a book, written by a former assistant of Anna Wintour’s, Lauren Weisberger, who Andy Sachs would represent. She even had her own Emily Charlton. With the 2nd movie being everything everyone is talking about, the latest issue of Vogue had Meryl Streep (Miranda Priestly) and Anna Wintour together as the front cover, titled “Seeing Double”. Although Anna Wintour has stepped down from her famous “Miranda Priestly” role as Editor in Chief of Vogue, with Chloe Malle taking over, this is the first time Anna Wintour herself was featured on the front cover of Vogue. This cover will definitely be remembered as a famous moment in fashion media.
With this high-fashion and witty movie up and running, theaters across the country are filling up super fast. Get your tickets while you can so you can watch The Devil Wears Prada 2 in style, with a purse-shaped popcorn holder in hand!
Some students at BHS have already seen the movie, or are planning on seeing it.
BHS Junior Elizabeth Trimarco excitedly exclaimed, “I’m planning on seeing the second one soon, I’m really excited! I loved the first one.”
BHS Senior and TEC editor Paridhi Miglani says “I haven’t watched the second yet but I loved the first. I’m sure it’s going to be great and I can’t wait to see more of Anne Hathaway’s growth as Andy Sachs.”
There are many people that argue that The Devil Wears Prada 2 will not be good compared to the first one at all. Many fans and critics have pointed out the modernized coloring, the millennial aspect, etc. However Paridhi continued, “There will definitely be some differences but I think the story line is too good to ruin the second one, I think it’ll be great.”
