On May 29, 2025, the Backrooms movie was released in theaters. The Backrooms is a horror movie directed by Kane Parsons, who made a horror series on YouTube that blew up to the point of an entire internet community obsessing over it. Backrooms was a huge success, with a 10 million dollar budget and making over 200 million at the box office.
However, since the release of the movie in theaters, there has been a lot of backlash online with people not liking the movie, claiming it had no real plot. Many feel that the movie depicted the backrooms differently than they thought it would. Junior Diya Syangbo says “I love the concept of the backrooms, I think it relates to dreams in a creepy way. I really like the music”.
Backrooms starts with a man named Clark struggling to grasp why his life turned out the way it did. He manages a dead-end furniture store that no customers shop at. Upon going down to the basement to fix an electrical issue, he stumbled across the Backrooms, a space that seems never ending. As he discovers the backrooms, he doesn’t appear to have much sense of danger, but that lacking sense of danger is short-lived as he keeps exploring with other people as well.
Watching Backrooms will leave you at the edge of your seat. It’s definitely not as gorey as other horror movies usually are, but it’s definitely worth the watch.
On the other hand, Obsession was released in theatres on May 15, 2026. Directed by 26 year old Curry Barker, Obsession follows a story of a man who decides to use his one wish to make his friend fall in love with him, but that all goes incredibly wrong. Obsession had only a 750,000 dollar budget, and made more than 225 million dollars at the box office, making it one of the most successful movies in history.
Obsession was a phenomenal movie, perfectly depicting various themes in such a strong way the audience is compelled to feel disturbed. There were some deeply unsettling scenes that had much more of a psychological impact rather than a physical one. Various people have different interpretations of the deeper meaning behind Obsession, and some people believe there isn’t a deeper meaning other than what’s shown in the movie. An anonymous BHS senior said “Obsession was definitely way more psychological horror. It was truly disturbing in a new way I haven’t seen other horror movies approach”.
Many people compare watching Backrooms and Obsession in one day to the Barbenhiemer era, where people would watch both the Barbie movie and Oppenheimer movie on the same day. This adopted the name Backsession, combining Backrooms and Obsession. Both movies were absolutely intriguing to watch, and the problems taking place felt more relatable to audiences. Many also feel refreshed seeing smaller actors in bigger roles, as many people feel tired of seeing the same celebrities star in the same movies.
