Residents of Bethpage are bundling up as Long Island experiences one of its coldest winters in recent years. Over the past several weeks, temperatures have dropped well below normal, bringing icy winds, frozen roads, and heavy layers of snow to the area.
Local officials say the extreme cold has made everyday life more difficult for many residents. Schools have faced delays and occasional closures, while commuters have had to navigate slippery roads during early morning hours. Town crews have worked day and night to pillow streets and spread salt to keep main roads safe.
The weather has also affected local businesses. Some shop owners say fewer costumes are venturing out in the freezing temperatures, while others have had to shorten their hours during particularly harsh days. At the same time, hardware stores and grocery markets have seen an increase in people stocking up on winter supplies.
Despite the difficult conditions, many residents are making the most of the snowy season. Families have gathered in local parks to sled down hills, children have built snowmen in front yards, and neighbors have helped shovel each other’s driveways.
Two sophomores at BHS explained how they felt about the snow storms.
Delilah Lasen stated, “I do not want anymore snow storms, I am very happy we had them and got traditional snow days, but I do not want any days off spring break so NO MORE SNOW!”
Juliette Sparke shared, “Words can not describe how happy I was when I found out we’d have TWO snow days.”
Meteorologists say the cold pattern may continue for several more weeks. Until temperatures begin to rise, the people of Bethpage are layering up, staying cautious, and hoping that warmer days arrive sooner rather than later.
