If I had to choose only one movie to watch for the rest of my life, it would be Shrek 2. The most iconic scene in cinematic history in my opinion comes from this movie, which is the “I Need A Hero” sequence where Shrek and his friends are trying to break into the palace to stop the Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming. I’m not even going to explain the plot of this movie because I want every person reading this article to go watch it themselves to actually comprehend what I’m talking about. Every joke lands perfectly and even two decades later, it never gets old.
The film introduces real-world problems through these hilarious lines too. For example, that scene where Shrek pretends to be from a labor union to get into the Fairy Godmother’s factory and the workers say that they don’t even get dental insurance highlights the issues surrounding medical expenses today.
Not only is it fun to watch, but it has an amazing message about love, not only romantic, but for yourself. Senior Yeslyn Ortez wrongly disagrees with me. She said, “Shrek is better off without Fiona,” even though Shrek is obviously happier in life with her. He offers to change himself because he believes it will make Fiona happy, but Fiona refuses because she’s only happy when she is with Shrek. As ogres! It was a choice made out of love, both for herself and “the ogre [she] fell in love with”. Junior Danielle Betwinek, who believes the second movie is the best out of the entire film series, disliked the ending of the story. “I think they should have just stuck to being humans at the end.” Nevertheless, this film is the prime example of what comes out of the American Dream.
