TEC: How long have you been teaching at Bethpage and what made you choose teaching?
Ms. Salcedo: I have been teaching at Bethpage for 2 years. I chose teaching because I wanted a career where I can help people and what better way to help people than to help young adults become wonderful human beings in Spanish.
TEC: What job would you pursue other than being a teacher?
Ms. Salcedo: If I was not a teacher, I would want to be a forensic psychologist so that I can interview murderers to see why they did their heinous crimes.
TEC: Where did you go to school and what did you study?
Ms. Salcedo: I went to St. John’s University for my bachelors in Education with a concentration in Spanish Adolescent Education. Afterwards, I went to Stony Brook for my professional masters and then I did an administration certificate for School Building and School District Leader at The College of Saint Rose.
TEC: What made you want to pursue teaching foreign languages?
Ms. Salcedo: I always grew up wanting to teach foreign languages. At first, I thought I wanted to teach history, but then probably in 10th grade, I had a terrible experience with my Spanish class. So, I decided to teach history in my Spanish classes. That is why I became a Spanish teacher because I can teach about my own history as a Latina and show others the history of Latin America.
TEC: When did you begin learning foreign languages?
Ms. Salcedo: I began learning Spanish at birth because my mom is Puerto Rican and my dad is Dominican, so we had a bilingual household. Then, probably around 16 I started learning Italian because I worked with Italian people at a restaurant. When I became a teacher, I continued working with a lot of people that always spoke to me in Italian and now I’m trying to learn a little more French and hopefully I can learn Portuguese as well.
TEC: What is one place you would like to travel outside the U.S? Why?
Ms. Salcedo: I have traveled to many places but one place I have yet to go is Asia, it is a continent that I haven’t gone to yet. I would love to go to Asia to visit all the different countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, and the Philippines just because I would love to learn more about their cultures and I obviously love their foods–they are fantastic!
TEC: If you could teach any language other than the one you are teaching right now, which one would it be?
Ms. Salcedo: Ooh that’s a good question, American Sign Language for sure.
TEC: If you could give advice to someone who wants to study foreign languages, what would it be?
Ms. Salcedo: You should absolutely study foreign languages because we need more young people in this field. We need people who are excited to learn and broaden their horizons and be part of a global community of language learners.
