On Monday February 23rd, NYC and Long Island were hit with a massive “bomb cyclone” weather pattern brought down over 20 inches of snow. The heavy, wet snow brought by the cyclone caused multiple disruptions in travel. The main one being the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road). It also requires a multiple day cleanup operation from the counties, using over 300 pieces of equipment that covers approximately 1,200 miles.
The storm broke through multiple records including the most inches of snow at Islip’s MacArthur airport with 29.1 inches of snow crushing the previous record of 27.8 inches in 2013. Conditions were looking even worse in Bay Shore, as an entire snow plow was overturned in the middle of a storm response, similarly, a Rocky Point snowplow had to be towed while trying to clear streets buried under mountains of snow.
A BHS Senior Isa Richmond said, “At first, I was like ‘oh my god snow,’ but by the next day I was sick of it. I gave up after 5 minutes of shoveling, it was just tedious and tiring. ”
Senior Zainab agreed with her, saying “the snow just kept on falling.”
On the contrary, BHS Senior Rebecca Ahmed said ,”I’m glad I got to sleep in…and that we had two extra days off.”
