Long Island’s Secret Spots: Kings Park Psych Center
The abandoned Kings Park Psychiatric Center was built in 1885 in Suffolk County, Long Island. According to Wikipedia, the name of the hospital was Kings County for its first 10 years of operating. The asylum was built by Brooklyn to decrease the crowding in other asylums. The asylum was passed over to New York State and it was renamed “Kings Park State Hospital”. Kings Park had its own farm where food was grown as well as its own railroad spur and power plant where they got their heating and electricity from. There are underground steam tunnels that connect from building to building.
From what I found while doing research, Kings Park had many patients and employees on the campus. In 1954 the amount of patients skyrocketed to 9,303. The campus on the hospital had over 100 buildings on it. New York State Office Of Mental Health made plans to shut Kings Park down along with Central Islip Psychiatric Center. In the 1990’s the plans were called for Kings Park and Central Islip to close and remaining patients from Kings Park and Central Islip were transferred to Pilgrim Psychiatric Center which is still operating today.
Today, The remains of Kings Park Psychiatric Center still stands on the grounds of Nissequogue River State Park in Kings Park. Many of the buildings are in complete disrepair and heavily vandalized and trashed by vandals as there is a lot of graffiti all over the walls and outside the buildings. There’s been many fires in the past few years. In the future, New York State has many pending plans to demolish the remaining buildings that are still standing. The reason why these buildings aren’t being demolished right now is because it will be really expensive to clean up all the Asbestos properly. There are consequences if you are caught breaking into the buildings or taking the underground tunnels to get in the buildings. You can get a ticket for trespassing or even get arrested. There are many cops that swarm the buildings day and night.
