Alexa McDougall is a senior at BHS, as well as this reporter’s best friend. She has a natural gift for helping others and extremely trustworthy. This is why she is perfectly suited to pursue a nursing career. When she goes to college, she’d like to take on a Nursing program, although she is unsure of whether she prefers to stay home or go away–a classic conundrum in the Bethpage community. The Eagle’s Cry sat down with Alexa to discuss.

The Eagle’s Cry: Do you prefer to stay home or go away for college? Why?

Alexa: I am undecided because I am very indecisive. I would like to go away to meet new people and go out on my own and get the college experience. I would also like to stay home because in the future I would be thanking myself for saving myself a lot of money.

The Eagle’s Cry: Have you applied to any colleges or universities yet? If so, which ones?

Alexa:  I applied to Molloy, Hunter, Hartford, Quinnipiac, Adelphi, Uconn and Umass

The Eagle’s Cry: Did anyone help you throughout the college application process?

Alexa: I mostly applied to all my schools by myself. Aside from my senior sem class everything was mostly me doing it all on my own.

The Eagle’s Cry: Have you visited any college campuses? What did you like/dislike

about them?

Alexa: Yes I have visited a few college campuses. I liked a lot of the nursing classrooms. I liked campuses where everything was mostly close together where I didn’t have to walk a lot to go get some food.

The Eagle’s Cry: What factors of a college campus and/or student life are most important to you?

Alexa: I would like all my classes to be close together so it’s not a hike to get to where I need to be. I would like a school where students are involved in their sport teams so I can go to games and have fun with friends.

The Eagle’s Cry: What major would you like to pursue, or are you going in as undecided?

The Eagle’s Cry: How did you decide which major would be best for you?

Alexa: I am going in as a Nursing major

Alexa says, “I would like to go away to meet new people and go out on my own and get the college experience. I would also like to stay home because in the future I would be thanking myself for saving myself a lot of money.” She mentions both the pros and cons regarding staying home or going away for college.

In applying to schools such as Molloy College, Adelphi University, Quinnipiac University, and University of Connecticut, Alexa applied to a fair share of both local and far-away colleges. With a little guidance from her Senior Seminar class, she was able to apply to her schools of choice with ease.

When visiting a few college campuses, Alexa was drawn to the nursing classrooms, provided she plans to pursue some kind of Nursing program in college. She also preferred easily navigable campuses.

Alexa says, “I would like all my classes to be close together so it’s not a hike to get to where I need to be.”

Although Alexa is conflicted on whether to stay local or go away and get a feel for the notorious “college experience,” she still has her heart set on becoming a nurse.
