Relay For Life Will Return to BHS: Kick-Off Meeting Next Week

Saturday, June 4, 2016 will mark Bethpage’s tenth time hosting Relay for Life. The American Cancer Society’s signature event will take place again on the high school field from 7:00 pm on Saturday to 7:00 am on Sunday morning.

The block-party-style walkathon will be preceded by a dinner free of charge for cancer survivors and their loved ones. This emotional night focuses on giving hope to those hoping for a cure while remembering those who have lost their battles with this terrible disease. Additionally, the luminaire ceremony features lit candles inside white paper bags with the names of those who battled cancer. It is breathtaking to watch these tributes illuminate the dark track and bleachers.

Students with any interest in participating in Relay for Life should attend the “kick-off information session” in the faculty cafeteria on Monday, February 29 at 7:00pm.

“February 29 is Leap Day, so with one extra day this year, how will you spend it? We invite you to come and fight against cancer with us,” said local Relay organizer, Megan Stewart.

Under the name ‘Bethpage Fight Club,’ BHS seniors are ahead of schedule and have already formed several teams in loving memory of our classmate, Joey Boncic. “‘Bethpage Fight Club’ was a big team last year, raising almost $3,000,” said Ms. Stewart. This earned the inaugural team recognition as a ‘Rising Star.’ Any senior interested in joining one of many Bethpage Fight Clubs, please see senior Anthony Regaterio for more information.

Like the seniors, all students are encouraged to join or start a team. “The earlier the better, because this gives more time to fundraise,” explained Ms. Stewart. “Cancer touches so many of us, it’s a really great opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.”

Everyone is welcome and all can participate in different ways as the event is not limited to only high schoolers.  If anyone has questions regarding Relay for Life, please email Ms Stewart at:  [email protected].
