Billboard Music Awards: YouTube Convention or The Taylor Swift Show?
With its confusing guest list ranging from A-Listers such as One Direction and Nicki Minaj to Youtubers and Viners (Social Media Applications) like Nash Grier and Cameron Dallas, the Billboard Music Awards was definitely watch-worthy. Hosts Chrissy Teigen and Ludacris helped kick off the event by introducing the world premiere of the highly anticipated “Bad Blood” music video by Taylor Swift, starring herself as well some of Hollywood’s biggest and hottest.
Zendaya, Gigi Hadid, Selena Gomez, and Cara Delevingne were some of those featured in the fiesty, four-minute video produced by “T Swizzle” herself. In just 24 hours, the country singer-turned pop superstar has attained over 18 million views, but hasn’t taken away the “24 hour Vevo world record” title from Nicki Minaj with her release of “Anaconda,” which garnered 19.6 million views.
“It was everything I anticipated it to be,” BHS senior (and huge Swift fan) Marie Kelly shared on the video. “From all the pictures taken and posted of the other celebs for promotional purposes, I expected it to be an action-packed four minutes. She didn’t disappoint.”
Aside from actual awards, everyone knows the reason for the heavy views and incredible social media activity is due to performances of all styles. The 2015 BBMAs didn’t disappoint its views during their three-hour event with performances including Nicki Minaj, Van Halen, Tori Kelly, Nick Jonas, Meghan Trainor (with John Legend), Hozier, Kelly Clarkson, Simple Plan, and Imagine Dragons.
Many BHS students agreed that the performances were phenomenal, but were disappointed that some of their favorite artists weren’t present. Sophomore Anna Moritz tells us, “It was entertaining and I enjoyed it, but it would’ve been better if 5SOS was there.” We agree, Anna.
From classic favorites to the newest faces in the industry, the BBMA’s did not fail to conjure up another captivating show with diverse acts and enticing guests. This was NOT the show to miss.
