BHS has some notable names when it comes to teachers…so many that 51 of them received at least one vote and were in the running for favorite teacher!
The Eagle’s Cry reporters Rylee Petruskie and Gabby Russo took a series of trips around the school surveying over 200 sophomores, juniors, and seniors, to collect opinions on WHO their favorite teacher is or was and WHY that teacher is or was so great. Factors that influence this decision are subjects taught, connection with students, and overall experience.
Students varied in their responses to our interview question…
“Ooo, I don’t know,” Sophia Donovan said, a frequent first line we encountered when starting our interviews. “There are a lot.”
After going back and forth for a while, many students decided on teachers in the Foreign Language Department as their favorite, with English and Math close behind.
A common theme with many BHS students was their personal connection to a teacher. Whether it be because of a career-oriented subject, cultural background, or shared interest, one on one conversation and time spent with teachers plays a large role in their overall rationale for popularity.
Many students confide in their teachers to discuss their personal or academic goals, interests, or problems, and find their willingness to listen comforting.
“She is always there for me. She always listens,” said junior Elizabeth Hoffner about Ms. Keane.
“I could always be open with her and talk to her about anything” said senior Vanessa Formato about Ms. Salcedo.
BHS students agree that both teachers’ supportiveness and ability to connect with their students on a deeper level than just academics is what makes them their favorite.
Now here are BHS top THREE favorite teachers….
In a very close second…by only ONE singular vote…Mr. Miller and Mr. Destefano came up in a tie.
“He’s easy to talk to and always has conversations with his students,” junior Ashleigh Blonder said about Mr. Miller.
Mr. Miller is a veteran teacher in the Math Department who teaches classes like Algebra 2, Pre-Calc, SAT Prep, and even Home Repair! His style of teaching is impactful and keeps students engaged. He is more known for his funny, yet inspirational stories he works into his teaching.
Mr. Destefano, however, teaches classes in the Art Department such as Studio Art. Students love him for his character, compassion, and generosity. He is always willing to create art such as banners for various clubs, teachers, and extracurriculars. Plus, he’s kinda funny.
And the winner is….Signora Calio! Signora Calio is a key part of the World Language Department, teaching both Italian and Spanish. She also runs the Italian Club and co-advises the Spanish Club—two of the most notable clubs here in Bethpage.
“She always understood; she stayed for after school even if it wasn’t her extra help day,” said senior Lilibeth Simon.
Signora Calio is known for her positivity, enthusiasm, and her understanding character. She radiates warmth and kindness wherever she goes; her presence alone raises the energy of those around her. She makes a lasting impact not only as a teacher, but as a role-model and friend. Bethpage is lucky to have someone as dedicated and genuine as her.
