Hamilton is a hip-hop style biographical musical. The musical covers the life of an American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton and the early history of the United States. From the beginning Hamilton has been globally recognized for the twist it brought on history.
The musical has won eight Drama Desk Awards and eleven awards at the Tony’s. In 2020, Disney+ released a filmed version of the Broadway musical and very recently that version was re-released in theaters after the original cast reunited for Hamilton’s 10th anniversary at the Tony Awards.
The original cast includes: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Daveed Diggs, Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Anthony Ramos, and Okieriete Onaodowan. The only remaining member of the original cast is Thayne Jasperson in the ensemble.
The re-release of the musical has been extremely popular within Broadway fans that there’s been footage of these people dressing up as George Washington at the movie theaters, along with entire movie theaters bursting with sing-alongs to the music.
BHS Junior Luke Baumbach says, “I love the movie and the original cast and nothing can compare to them. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a lyrical genius.” Eagles’ Cry Advisor, Mr. Malossi said, “Hamilton is maybe the greatest piece of art I’ve ever seen performed, and it deserves as wide a release as possible.”
Hamilton is one of the most well-known musicals performed on Broadway and some say it is “culturally significant to American society.” Not only was the movie impactful, it was also inspiring. When Lin-Manuel Miranda first pitched the idea, he was seen as crazy…though, despite the setbacks, Hamilton has become a global sensation.
