Phones in school: Should they be banned or not? That is the question everyone is wondering. Just about a month ago, a New York State ban of cellphones in school was put into place. New York is implementing a “bell-to-bell” phone ban in k-12 schools, meaning students can not use their cell-phones, even in lunch, passing periods, or study halls. Many students and teachers at BHS feel very strongly about the ban, whether they agree with it or not. Us at the Eagle’s Cry interviewed some BHS students and teachers to get their opinions.
Many people, mostly students, feel that phones should not be banned. Sophomore Sophia Marullo states that, “It will just be more of a distraction not having it.” Sophomore Audrey Wetzel explains that, “It is more dangerous than beneficial. What if something bad happens in the school, how would I call or text someone?”
Even seniors graduating this year, who won’t be affected by the ban, agree that this ban is insane. Senior Olivia Greenfield agrees with Sophomore Audrey Wetzel by saying, “What if there is an emergency? I want to be able to reach out to my family, god forbid anything happens!”
Senior Julia Baumbach says, “Sometimes students can use it for educational purposes. Or maybe they just have a free period, like lunch. What would they do?”
Some students and teachers believe this law is understandable.
Mr. Malossi explains, “I went to Cold Spring harbor high school, and I talked to current teachers who said their students had their phones in Yondr pouches from 7:30-2:30. These teachers who have been teaching for 30 years said having no phones reminds them of the ‘90’s.” He continues by saying that, “attitudes of students have changed, they look less tired, and they are actually talking to teachers, instead of being glued to their phones.”
“I don’t think we need a full ban, but it may do more good than harm,” Senior Nora Kerrigan explains.
As you can see, BHS has mixed opinions on whether phones should be banned in school or not. However, we will report back to you in the 2025-2026 school year on what is happening to our phones!
On that note, have a great summer BHS!
