In a world of Education, the significant shift of Homeschooling is creating an impact throughout the world. Initially, the pandemic of Covid-19 had initiated this soar as it forced a great number of families to remote learning as well as homeschooling to prevent worse effects. This impact doesn’t only affect health and safety but also the expectation of children’s learning experiences, the different values in a home and school environment, and the long term effect of this decision. 

At Bethpage High School, a few students were interviewed about their views on homeschooling. They were asked whether they believe homeschooling is beneficial, how it affects learning for children, the long term negative effects and how a child’s values might differ depending on their education type. A junior, Tara Gyaltsen, expressed that homeschooling can be effective “as long as they learn the proper stuff that they need to learn and they have good teachers”. However, she emphasized the importance of a school environment for learning communication skills, suggesting that homeschooled children might be limited to their household’s beliefs, while traditionally schooled students are exposed to a wider range of perspectives. Another student, Abigail Scully, believed homeschooling might be beneficial academically but detrimental socially. She stated that “ Socially, I think that there’s a difference between kids who are homeschooled versus the kids who attend traditional school”. She completed that sentence with homeschooled students who may struggle with social development and forming connections with peers, which could cause long-term issues. Lastly, Paridhi Miglani shared that while homeschooling might offer academic advantages, homeschooled children often lack social skills and are more isolated, which she believes is harmful in real-world situations. She completed the questions by stating “I think a lot of their values are basically just copies of their parents. I think that they’re not  making their own values. They’re not making their own beliefs either.” 

In conclusion, the rise of homeschooling has accelerated significantly, which has sparked a conversation about the future of education. While homeschooling may offer certain academic benefits, teenagers from Bethpage High School students have revealed growing concerns about its social and developmental impacts.. As education continues to evolve, there might be many changes between social peers among themselves when it comes to academic excellence and emotional growth.
