On March 19, 2025, Hulu released a limited series called Good American Family, told through multiple perspectives based on the adoption of Natalia Grace, who was assumed to be a young Ukrainian girl with dwarfism, or spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, a rare bone disorder. Ellen Pompeo played Kristine, and this was her first major role since Grey’s Anatomy. Similarly another 3 season documentary called The Curious Case of Natalia Grace was released in 2023.
After the Barnett family adopted her, they experienced strange behavior through her caretaking, which is mostly seen through the mom, Kristine Barnett’s perspective, than later on through Natalia’s perspective. Throughout the show, the Barnetts begin to believe Natalia is not actually a child.
In the first couple episodes, we see Natalia as a threat to the Barnetts, especially Kristine. She seemingly threatened Kristine with a knife multiple times and sabotaged her work events and her relationship with her husband. She also seemed to want to kill Kristine and her sons, and favored the father, Michael Barnett.
However, by the 4th episode we begin to see this story through Natalia’s eyes as she struggles to live on her own after Kristine and Michael left her in an apartment to fend for herself. We get to see the innocence she actually carries, and how much she struggles to feed, clean and overall take care of herself. She misses Kristine and Michael, even though we see her supposedly not liking Kristine.
Ultimately in the end, Natalia was the real victim. She was legally 9 years old at the time, and is 22 now. Kristine Barnett was charged with neglect of a dependent in 2019. However, she and Michael did not receive any jail time, and Michael was not charged with any crime. They divorced around 2018.
Where is Natalian Grace now? Currently, she is living with the DePaul family in upstate New York.
