Welcome back to our “A Day In The Life” series, where we take a look into the daily routines of BHS students who all have different goals, passions, and days.
Today’s feature is an anonymous Bethpage junior who’s pursuing a career in law enforcement.
6:30 a.m. – Her alarm goes off and her busy day begins.
7:10 a.m. – She leaves her house and gets to school ten minutes later.
7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. – According to her, she’s “barely getting through the school day” at this time of the year especially with AP exams. But she’s still looking forward to taking Criminal Justice next year. She says, “Any class that has to do with communication is a big help like the research classes at BHS.” Recently, she just finished her AP Research project which was on how a state’s political alignment impacts the percentage of the state’s female police officers.
4:30 p.m. – After getting home, she takes about three hours to eat and catch up on homework and studying.
She’s a part of the Explorers Program done through the Nassau County Police Department where young adults ages 14—20 gain experience through law-enforcement training. She’s heading to Nationals for scenarios where they have to act out calls and responses to emergencies.
On some Tuesday nights, during the evenings from 7–9 p.m., she heads to the police academy for post meetings that focus on the basics of policing. A few nights ago, she had spent an hour reciting the phonetic alphabet.
On Saturdays:
10 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Lecture
12 p.m. to 1 p.m. – Lunch
1 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Scenarios practice
4 p.m. to 6 p.m. – Extra scenarios training
Despite the long days, she still finds time to finish up her schoolwork. She admits that she usually goes to sleep at around 1 a.m. during this time of the year, during AP season.
