Sinners is a new movie in which twin brothers decide to open a juke joint in their hometown Mississippi where they find supernatural chaos. It’s a Southern vampire movie that serves as an allegory to the struggles minorities face.
Sinners is directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Michael B. Jordan who plays the roles of both twins, named Smoke and Stack. Hailee Steinfield plays Mary, Li Jun Li stars as Grace, and Wunmi Mosaku plays Annie. The film primarily focuses on using vampires as a way to convey the idea of assimilation.
Horror audiences often view vampires as the most selfish supernaturals because they possess all of these traits of immortality, enhanced speed and strength, and beauty. They’re essentially what people would want to be if they had to choose between being a monster and a human. This is what the film’s analogy is: Assimilation into a predominantly white community where minorities often find themselves wanting to become part of that community. However, their consequences are the erasure of their cultural identity. If the humans are lured in by the vampires to become one of them, they erase their human nature. By comparison serves to explore human nature vs. desire.
Personally if I was in the movie, I’d join the vampires because the main antagonists did a good Irish jig. That would’ve convinced me. The film does a nice job of representing Irish, Black, Indigenous and Asian people.
If you have time, this is definitely a movie you should watch. I’d even go as far as saying it’s the movie of the year.
