Long Island is considered part of New York but even New York City has a different accent compared to Long Island. The way people pronounce words such as “water, coffee, or dog” can be completely different. So for example, someone from New York city would enunciate the “aw” in the word “water”. TEC interviewed BHS senior Lauren Kelly who is native to Bethpage and Caryn who moved from New York City. This comparison is used to differentiate their accents when they speak.
TEC: Pronounce “water.”
Lauren: “Water”
Caryn: “Wa-auter” (more pronunciation on the au)
TEC: Pronounce “coffee.”
Caryn: “kau-fee” (more pronunciation on the au rather than o)
Lauren: “Ko-fee”
TEC: Pronounce “dog.”
Lauren: “dog” (more pronunciation on the o)
Caryn: “dog” (more on the a sound than the o)
As someone who moved from New York City those three words are how people can differentiate one who grew up in New York City compared to those who grew up in Long Island.
