BHS offers so many opportunities for students to showcase their interests and goals throughout classes and clubs. There are so many different options, including classes such as math, science, history, art, and business, as well as clubs like sports. However, some students wish there were other specific classes to take here to enhance their interests and the learning experience! You can pretty much find any class that aligns with your personal interests in a way, but something more particular could give students a better understanding and knowledge of perhaps what they want to work in as a career.
Fashion History:
Students who might want to major in the fashion industry might be interested in this course. Although BHS offers a Fashion Design course, this Fashion History class covers the origin of certain fashion trends and is vastly similar to the AP Art History course that BHS offers.
Culinary Arts:
Students might have experienced taking a course similar to this during middle school for FACS class, but might be interested in continuing this course in high school. This course may provide insight on cuisines of different cultures, mannerisms when serving, proper cooking etiquette, and helpful tips.
Content Creation:
Similar to Digital Media, which is already available at BHS, but less of an art form and more through social media studies. Students who enjoy watching vloggers or influencers on social media platforms might be interested in learning about the career and possibly becoming a content creator themselves.
Debate/Public Speaking:
This course can be open to students interested in clubs such as the ones we offer in BHS: Model UN, Mock Trial, Ethics, or Business/Finance. This club will offer tips and strategies and practice for those who struggle with public speaking or strengthening their speaking skills.
AI Usage:
This course can be offered to teach students the proper way to utilize AI most effectively in schools. With the increase of technology in our modern society, students will be able to benefit from this class as they will learn how AI can be used to their advantage. By the end of this course, students will be able to utilize AI to enhance their critical thinking skills and creativity instead of undermining their abilities with this accessible use of AI.
Zoology:
This course would be directed towards students interested in the study of animals and in careers such as a veterinarian, ecologist, and job opportunities at the zoo and animal keepers. Students could learn to understand the anatomy of animals, how they behave, how to tend and care for different animals, and the safety precautions and living habits.
Our Eagle Reporters asked around students at BHS for their thoughts on possibly incorporating these electives:
Caroline Murphy, a sophomore here at BHS, wishes they had more music electives like music studio, music history, or contemporary music studies. There already is a music theory class, but it is not currently available.
Tara Gyaltsen, a junior here at BHS, said, “I think these electives would be useful to students who want to major in these subjects in college.”
Luke Baumbach said, “Even though there is a drama club, a musical theater class would be cool.”
We hope BHS considers adding these electives in the future! Feel free to comment any other elective ideas down below!
