Brandy Melville, a fast-fashion brand, is known for its effortless style among teenagers. However, the brand has been the center of multiple controversies after the recent Netflix documentary Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion. Brandy Mellville has been exposed for allegations regarding exploitation, discriminatory hiring practices, and their exclusive“one size fits all” policy.
Amidst the height of Brandy Melville’s notoriety, Bethpage High School students were asked whether Brandy Melville deserves to be the prevalent, well-known brand it is today.
For many students at Bethpage, Brandy is a cheap way to obtain stylish yet comfortable clothes. Carys Cho, a senior at BHS, said, “I shop there often. I love Brandy.” Others find Brandy stylish, but they also recognize the controversy around it.
Samreen Ghotra, a junior, said, “[Brandy Melville] is so cute. I love it! But I heard that they only have one size. I think they should broaden their horizon to sell clothes to other people.”
Senior Aleena Hussain, said “I like some of their items; however, I think you can buy the same things from other stores at a cheaper price.”
Abby Scully, a junior, said, “I think they should be more body inclusive cause there is only one size. A vast majority of the criticism Brandy had taken, due to their controversy with their “one size fits all” policy, has sparked a change in the sizing of their clothes. Brandy has seemed to be undermining surrounding controversies by changing the sizing of their clothes to cater toward a broader group of consumers.
Still, although Brandy Mellville faces harsh criticism to this day, they are still rising in popularity, driven by their cult-like following, exclusivity, and social media influence.
