On January 10th 2025, Mr. Portuese’s Forensics’ had the opportunity to visit the Nassau County Police Academy! At the Academy, students got to take a spin in police cars, meet the mounted unit, and watch the NCPD helicopters land and take off.
First, officers gave a presentation to BHS students on the dangers of reckless and distracted driving. Then, each student got to ride in the police car for the high-speed chase course pictured below. All Nassau County Police Officers are required to pass the course to become a Nassau County Police Officer. Many students agreed that this was their favorite part of the trip, especially the “J turn”, a quick maneuver usually done in emergency situations .
Following the high-speed chase course, students had the chance to witness an NYPD helicopter landing. The pilots explained their job and students were allowed to ask any questions about the field. Next, two police officers rode out on horseback. They explained that although a mounted unit may seem obsolete in this day and age, they are still an asset to the department and regularly utilized.
To end off the trip we took a full tour of the academy, including a room full of televisions with screening various news channels.
Overall, the trip was a memorable experience and a new BHS student favorite. The Nassau County Police Academy shared valuable information for every student!
Thank you, Mr. Portuese and NCPD!
