I’m back giving The Eagle’s Cry an update on this year’s Groundhog’s Day results. In case you missed last year’s article, here is what Groundhog’s Day is all about.
Every year on February 2nd, the mayor of New York, (and sometimes other officials), raises the Groundhog out of its hole to determine whether spring is coming or if there is going to be six more weeks of winter. If the Groundhog sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it does not see its shadow, supposedly spring is coming shortly.
This year, at 7:26 a.m. on February 2nd in Punxsutawney, Pa, Punxsutawney Phil, the Groundhog, was raised out of his home, Gobbler’s Knob, and predicted that there will be six more weeks his winter since he saw its shadow. Typically, most people hope for Spring to come soon to get rid of the cold weather, however that is not the case this year.
Lets ask some Bethpage High School students their thoughts on this year’s Groundhog’s Day results.
Bringing back Lauren Kelly from last year, now a senior: “I am so upset that there are six more weeks of winter because it’s been cold enough and I really needed a win for it to be Spring sooner.”
Now, with someone new, we have senior Katie O’Callaghan, in which she said, “I am not very happy with the outcome of Groundhog’s Day, and I wish it was going to be spring sooner.”
As predicted, Bethpage High School students are not happy with this year’s results, understandably so. However this may all be a myth, so maybe Spring will come sooner after all.
FUN FACT: This year, 2025, is Punxsutawney Phil’s first Groundhog’s Day as a father! Congratulations Punxsutawney Phil!
