Fires have emerged all throughout California in the Los Angeles area the second week of the new year. At least 25 people have died in the fires as of January 15, 2025. Two of the major fires Palisades and Eaton burned all across the state. Palisades burnt through more than 23,000 acres with only 14% of it being contained. The other fire, Eaton, was responsible for 16 deaths and destroyed more than 12,000 structures in the Northern part of Los Angeles; it is currently 33% contained Many homes are without power and hot fire across the state. The causes of these fires are still being investigated; lightning, which is the most common source of fires in the past, have been ruled out.
The damage the fires caused are irreversible. Many California residents lost their homes, businesses, pets, and items which will never be replaceable. Even celebrities with top tier supplies for their homes had to say goodbye.
Throughout it all though, the state of California persevered through. By helping neighbors, family members, friends, and even strangers, residents learned the importance of community. Many organizations created ways for people from all over the world to donate to California. There have been many fundraisers established as well. Many LA-based artists are performing at the FireAid Benefit concert on January 30th to raise money for LA residents who are in need. The concert will be available to stream live on many platforms for the entire world to watch.
Students at Bethpage High School have also sent their regards to the residents of Los Angeles: “It is horrible what happened, but it goes to show the community we as a nation can build.”
