With her close-knit family, BHS Sophomore, Sophia Marullo, familiarizes herself with her Italian culture through Pasta e Fagioli.
This pasta dish originates from Italy with its only true requirements being beans and pasta. The creamy sauce is typically stewed with a mix of olive oil, garlic, onion, celery, carrots and fresh tomatoes.
Sophia exclaims, “The first time I had it was probably when I was in first grade. My family and I always go to big Italian restaurants”.
Although Sophia isn’t fully Italian, she explains that both sides of her family had relatives that grew up in Italy. Sophia is still able to connect with this dish as it is one of the main dishes she orders in restaurants.
Sophia’s story highlights another perspective regarding food and culture. People are able to resonate with a certain culture with a comfort meal. Whether that be Pasta e Fagioli or another dish, food serves as a way to bridge communities.
By sharing Sophia’s story, I hope people make their own special connection to their identity through their favorite foods. If you would like to share your own story, please email me! ([email protected])
