On Sunday, January 5, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards was aired on live television. Many memorable moments were made during this annual event, and some have caused many debates online over the awards.
The Award for Best Motion Picture-Drama: The Brutalist, directed by Grady Corbet. Many people agree with this decision due to the impact the movie made on the audience through its depiction of the “American Dream”. Despite this, many have other opinions. 11th grader, Tara Gyaltsen, believed that A Complete Unknown should have won. She said, “I love Timothée Chalamet, like he’s literally an icon. The movie was pretty good and it was a cool depiction of Bob Dylan’s life.”
One award that stirred up controversy on social media was Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The movie that won the award was Emilia Perez, a musical about a powerful Mexican cartel leader who undergoes gender-affirming surgery to escape her criminal past.
Senior Aleena Hussain said, “There’s this one movie called Emilia Perez that won. I never watched it, but I saw that a lot of people were hating on it and it still won a ton of awards.”
Instead of this movie, many thought that either Anora or the hit musical, Wicked, should have won.
Sophomore Caryn Cho said, “Well I don’t know any of the movies on that list except Wicked, so I think Wicked should have won.”
Junior Paridhi Miglani said, “Wicked was a true piece of art; anyone can tell how much effort they put into making the movie.”
Furthermore, Sebastian Stan winning the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, was one of my favorite moments of the awards show. He has appeared in so many of my favorite shows such as Gossip Girl and Once Upon A Time, and my favorite movie franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe; I’m so glad that he has finally gotten the recognition that he deserves.
The hit short series, Baby Reindeer, won the Golden Globe for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. I had no interest in watching the show, but I was able to see clips of it on TikTok and people’s reactions to it. From what I have seen, it’s about a woman named Martha who continuously stalks the main character, Donny. Although, I didn’t even see Baby Reindeer, I still had nightmares about Martha stalking me instead of Donny, which was scary, but it does show that Jessica Gunning, the actress, did a great job in portraying Martha, leading her to win the award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television.
Many controversies have stirred up between who should’ve been Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. The female actor who had won the Golden Globe was Fernandes Torres. Torres had made a movie debut at the age of 16, and after that movie she was chosen to star in a dozen of movies. She’s known as an actress, writer, columnist, and a screenwriter. Alternatively, controversies had raised that the Golden Globe nominee should’ve been Angelina Jolie. Angelina Jolie is known by many people and her latest movie Maria, was felt that it really shows the emotional and physical views of what a woman has to go through as well as a true-heartbreak.
The Golden Globe winners had raised many different opinions, on how some awards were fair while others seemed as not. The outcome of the show has raised mass speculation and predictions on the winners of the Oscars, which will be on March 2nd, 2025.
