It’s only a couple of months into the 24-25 school year, and Empty Bowls has been working hard to crank out as many bowls as possible. This is Empty Bowls’ third year of running the fundraiser and event to create enough charitable donations for Island Harvest. Island Harvest’s goal is to end hunger in Long Island. Ms. Cardo, a well-loved ceramics art teacher, is the advisor for this community service project. The Eagle’s Cry chatted with Ms. Cardo to learn more about this fundraiser.
TEC: How did this organization come to be? Who are the founders?
Ms. Cardo: Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort, and the idea came from somebody, but we’re self-organized here, and the idea of it is to create bowls, have this event, raise money, and choose a hunger organization of our choice. I brought the event here with the efforts of other pottery students.
TEC: How often do you guys meet?
Ms. Cardo: “Five times a month.”
TEC: On average, how much money would you guys raise for Island Harvest?
Ms. Cardo: “3,000 a year.”
TEC: What are the members of the Empty Bowls community like?
Ms. Cardo: “Selfless, dedicated, and service-minded individuals.”
TEC: What are some of your most favorite highlights from this year and the previous years of Empty Bowls?
Ms. Cardo: “The community feeling when students are here and the joy when students are working hard, as well as the people coming to the event.”
Overall, look forward to seeing new bowls and Empty Bowls at their event this March of 2025!
