Constantly surrounded by her welcoming and friendly culture, BHS Sophomore, Harsita can always rely on Dosi to resonate with her identity in relation to her ethnicity..
This special dish originates from India and is a thin, savory crepe made with fermented lentil and rice batter. This dish is commonly served with sambar, an Indian lentil stew filled with spices, herbs and vegetables.
Harsita explained, “To get that crepe-like substance you pour the dough onto a frying pan until it becomes golden brown. That’s when it’s really crispy and nice. Sambar is the liquid dip that goes with it.”
Dosi is a dish that Harsita grew up eating. Whether it was served for breakfast or dinner or at a local restaurant, she realized that this dish made her feel in touch with her culture. She explained that India’s culture is very family oriented as it brought people together.
Coming home from school, she would notice her parents making this dish for her and be reminded of some phases of her life where she was too picky to try other ethnic dishes. She realized she could always rely on Dosi.
Harsita said, “It’s always been my comfort food.”
Harsita connects this special meal to her own identity as she feels that this dish helped her gain awareness of her own ethnic background and feel a sense of comfort around her own community.
By sharing Harsita’s story, I hope people make their own special connection to their identity through their favorite foods. If you would like to share your own story, please email me! ([email protected])
