On November 15, over 500 students—more than 50% of the student population–were absent from BHS due to an unspecified rumor. This has led many students and parents to look at the safety of BHS students and staff. In light of this, The Eagle’s Cry had the opportunity to conduct an interview with BHS principal, Mr. Jantz regarding Bethpage safety.
TEC: What CAN we say about the events that led to Friday’s mass absence?
Principal Jantz:
“We stress this every year: if you see something, say something. Report anything uncomfortable, no matter what. At no point were kids or staff in danger. Most online rumors, especially the most troubling ones, were unfounded, as confirmed by police and Homeland Security, who cleared us to open. Comments about threats are taken seriously—police get involved, no exceptions. It’s unfortunate today’s students grow up in this reality, but communication is key. Please reach out to us directly instead of turning to social media.”
TEC: What security upgrades has the high school undergone in the last few years?
Principal Jantz:
“We have an excellent one button lock down system that was fully implemented in 2021. It involves a panic button that when pressed closes and locks every door school-wide. It disables all swipes, and contacts 911 instantly—eliminating the risk of fumbling with keys.”
“All doors in instructional spaces were replaced with hardened wood, and windows are bullet-resistant. Additionally, our vestibule, or ‘man trap,’ prevents direct access. If a threat is identified, the area locks, and police are called to handle the situation. It’s a robust system I wish my kids’ school had.”
TEC: Is there a police or homeland security team that recommends changes? Why were those specific security upgrades recommended for BHS?
Principal Jantz:
“Mr. Clark and Mr. Schneider initiated this effort. After Parkland, we focused on improving safety, and after a year of research, we identified this system as the most effective solution.”
TEC: What are your thoughts on student safety at BHS?
Principal Jantz:
“School security is what keeps me up at night—not exams, because I trust our phenomenal teachers and students. Our priority is making Bethpage High School a safe place for teaching and learning. Anytime we hear even a whisper of a concern, we act immediately—that’s the most important part of my job”
“I think it is important that everyone knows that I have four officers who are solely designated for our school on my phone. I could call them right now and they would pick up.”
TEC: Would you have kept your kids home from school in a similar situation?
Principal Jantz:
“I think each student and case is different, and I respect every parent’s decision.”
With all that being said, it’s clear to The Eagle’s Cry that BHS is one of the safest school districts in the country. From bulletproof doors to a dedicated team of officers, BHS is covered on the security front. What do you think of safety at BHS?
