As technology advances and artificial intelligence, also known as AI, grows, issues such as plagiarism and cheating arise in academic settings. Over the past couple of years, the use of AI systems such as ChatGPT to complete assignments has become an increasing problem at Bethpage High School. However, while many teachers dislike the use of AI, there are ways it can be used beneficially that are often overlooked.
In many courses, specifically English, the use of AI seems like an easy way out. What many students don’t realize, though, is that teachers are able to see what parts of their writings have been plagiarized from artificial intelligence systems.
Julia Baumbach, a BHS senior, said, “I heard a lot of people have been caught using ChatGPT in College English classes this year.”.
Many teachers dislike AI; some might fear it. This growing technological system has the possibility to take over many human jobs and student capabilities. Although this is possible, when used responsibly, the system can be greatly beneficial for students, teachers, and people in many different career fields.
Mr. Malossi said, “AI can spur creativity by giving students ideas. I’m also excited to use it in class, where kids can actually correct the AI’s errors. However, I fear that most kids don’t know how to use it responsibly. I plan on creating lessons to teach proper use.”
This is only one example of how AI can be used as an educational tool rather than an easy way out. If teachers like Malossi took the time to educate students on ways to use AI positively, the chances of students using it to plagiarize would be much less.
Joe Ellinger, a BHS Senior, said, “I use AI to help me think of ideas, but that’s it.”
When used responsibly, like how Joe uses it, AI is a creative and helpful tool, not a negative one.
Additionally, AI can be used to check grammar and find errors in writing. When requested to, AI can locate grammatical, spelling, or punctuation mistakes, explain why they are wrong, and fix them. By doing so, students are able to learn what they did wrong and how to change it, helping them in all areas of writing, not only for in-class assignments.
Zach Fradella said, “I’m a terrible speller, and AI points out my mistakes. That way I can learn the correct way to spell it.”
We believe if teachers educated students on the benefits of AI and how to use it, respectively, the chances of students plagiarizing would decrease, and innovation would prosper.
Yes, artificial intelligence is a futuristic technological advancement that we hope will benefit everybody in a multitude of ways. However, it is extremely important for students, teachers, and everyone in general to utilize it in proper manners.
