The novel Me Before You was published in January of 2012, and was adapted into a movie shortly after by Warner Bros production, released in June of 2016. The film is based in the United Kingdom, using British actors such as Sam Claffin and Emilia Clarke.
The film begins demonstrating how the leading male William Traynor came to be paralyzed from the neck down. It then flips to how leading female Louisa Clark was released from her job, exemplifying her family’s need for money and her hunt for a new job. Continuing her hunt she quickly ends up taking on the role of Will’s caretaker and companion to have around. Will, being angry at life for the unlucky cards he was dealt, makes the first weeks of Louisa’s job miserable. Taking out every bit of built up frustration on her, while she is someone never without a smile on her face.
Throughout the film you catch him smiling at her during her quirky moments, changing his mindset about her. He finds comfort in her company and the energy she brings each day. While watching the movie, the viewers see Louisa pull William out of the depression he had been in since his accident. It’s visible to the audience that every moment spent with her brings life back into his eyes and the smile back to his face. She makes him want to live again, go 0utside and be beyond the walls of his annex.
Little moments throughout the film make it apparent that the two are falling in love, bringing out sides of one another that have been hidden away for a long time. You watch him remember each detail about her, and you watch her bring him out of a hole he never thought he could escape.
Though these things increase every moment the two spend together, Will is set on his decision to not continue his life. He had made a deal with his parents when Louisa began working that he would give them six more months, then he would go to Switzerland and it would all be over. When Louisa found out she was distraught, though she thought she could change his mind. While the two were on holiday together, he explained to her that there was no changing his mind, no matter how he felt towards her.
The film captures the innocence of falling in love with someone, and having them save all the best parts of you. It also depicts the heartache of losing someone, and the feeling that love cannot save all, despite how strongly it is felt.
