At Bethpage High School, the atmosphere is typically vibrant with the energy of students and staff. Among the dedicated staff, two stand out for their unwavering commitment to their students: Ms. D’Angio, a passionate teacher, and Ms. Miller, a devoted school psychologist. Their stories intertwine, creating a supportive environment for everyone.
Ms. D’Angio often reflects on the unique nature of her profession.
She said, “Teaching is a very special career to be in. As a teacher, you get the opportunity to work with so many people. Some of the challenges in our career can stem from inside or outside of the classroom. It’s important for us to remember that we all have challenges that we face day in and day out. Showing compassion for others and being a role model is something that has contributed to the person and teacher I have grown to be.”
Her words resonate deeply with her students, who look up to her as a guide and mentor.
On the other hand, Ms. Miller finds her motivation in the progress and relationships she builds with her students.
Ms. Miller said, “My students are the fuel to a lot of my motivation. Seeing their progress and the relationships I develop with my students throughout the school year is just a reminder I am in the right profession. My students always tell me how much they learn from me, but I truly learn so much from them. They are so inspirational and to see their growth from September-June is how I stay motivated and passionate to continue to help others.”
Her dedication is evident in the way she balances her responsibilities and maintains a supportive presence for her students.
Both Ms. D’Angio and Ms. Miller emphasize the importance of perseverance and self care in their roles.
Ms. D’Angio said, “I think the most important thing is to not get discouraged if something doesn’t work, or if it is taking you more time then you would like to, to achieve the goal you’re working towards. As long as I’m working hard and improving myself in a better way with the bigger picture in mind, I will get there.”
Similarly, Ms. Miller practices what she preaches by helping her students balance their extracurriculars and school work while also taking breaks herself.
Ms. Miller said, “I try to help my students balance extracurriculars and schoolwork all the time, but I also practice what I preach. I take breaks throughout the week if I were to bring work home and set up time limits.”
The positive impact of their passion is evident in the increased confidence and academic achievements of their students. Their combined wisdom and dedication create a nurturing environment at BHS, where both students and staff thrive.
