A season filled with big events. No hitters, a shortstop turned pop star, a 50-50 season, the Met’s Grimace insanity run, and playoff determining games down to the wire. The 2024 season did not disappoint, but what was the best part of the season? Lets ask BHS…
No Hitters
Ronel Blanco of the Astros, Dylan Cease of the Padres, and Blake Snell of the Giants all had no hitter of their own and Shota Imanaga (7), Nate Pearson (1), and Porter Hodge (1) all contributed to a combined no hitter for the Cubs. In a season where pitchers dominated hitters it was clear that swing and miss stuff was the defining factor for these pitchers as all were impressed with their strikeout numbers.
Junior Nora Kerrigan described the pitching as “Insane. To think that we saw four no hitters this season alone is amazing.”
The Grimace Insanity Run
As part of a promotion, the McDonalds character, Grimace, threw out the first pitch on June 12th at Citi Field. At this point the Mets were playing awful, they were 24-33 through May and fans like Frank the Tank deemed the season a failure. Leave it to Grimace.
After this first pitch the team turned it around and fans attached themselves to the character. The Mets rode Grimace all the way to the finish line as they made the Wild Card in their second to last game of the season. And yes, after Fransisco Lindor hit the go ahead home run to get them into the playoffs, Grimace was spotted in the stands.
BHS English Teacher Mr. Malossi said, “I never got the whole Grimace thing until recently when I realized that he brought all Mets fans together in a beautiful way.”
And Senior Nora Kerrigan said, “After GRI-MACH-E threw out the first pitch he set the stage for their payoff run.”
Shohei Ohtani’s 50-50 Season
In 148 years of baseball history, never have we seen a 50 home run, 50 stolen base season. Leave it to Shohei Ohtani to get the job done. IN his first season with the Dodgers, Shohei looked to show the league why he was with the $700 million dollars that the Dodgers were paying him. That he did! He finished the season with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases; the first ever 50-50 season in MLB history.
“OMG!”
Jose Iglesias a career journeyman and songwriter!? On June 28th, the Mets lost. Playing really bad baseball the team was desperate for a rally. When Mets shortstop Jose Iglesias released his own song OMG and performed it in the stadium after a win, the team took off. This was the spark the team needed and they rode it throughout the season. Each home run was followed by a picture with their “OMG” sign and the sign made numerous appearances in their locker room.
Senior Julia Baumbach, “I think it’s a really exciting song and it adds a lot of excitement to the team.”
White Sox 21 Game Losing Streak / Worst Record In Modern Era
What a better way to end the season with the worst record in the Modern Era. At 41-121 the White Sox crushed the record for, well… worst record.
Eva Neamonitis explained that the season was, “an embarrassment for the city of Chicago.”
All in all it was an amazing season filled with ups and downs for all teams. Go Yankees!
