This past summer, thousands of eagerly sat in front of their TVs to watch one of the biggest and most fascinating events, the 2024 Summer Olympics. The Olympics is an event where athletes with the utmost talent from over 100 different countries participate. This year the Olympics were held in Paris, France. The games began on Friday, July 26th, and ended on Sunday, August 11th.
For the first time ever, the opening ceremony took place outside of the stadium. Instead of the customary marching parade, the athletes all rode in on boats going down the Seine river. Each team waved their flags tall and proud which included LeBron James, who served as the flag bearer for team USA.
This year, the United States finished with 40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze medals for a grand total of one hundred twenty-six. Simone Biles, a well known olympic gymnast, brought home four medals for team USA. Both reporters agreed that Suni Lee was a very talented gymnast and she had a certain elegance in her performances. The U.S. won the most medals overall, beating out China, who came up short with only 91 medals, as well as Japan, Australia and France. Though this victory wasn’t easy to achieve, it came with the success of many extremely talented and impressive athletes, including swimmer Katie Ledecky, trackstar Noah Lyles, and basketball player Kevin Durant.
The Olympics seem to be a popular event to watch, as it was watched by over 30 million people this summer.
BHS sophomore Luke Baumbach said, “I would rather watch the Summer Olympics than the Winter Olympics.” Luke also said if he were to be in the Olympics, he would want to compete in one of the tennis events. Certain parts of the Olympics definitely stood to BHS Italian teacher Miss Calio. Although she is not a fan of SnoopDogg, she thought he was very entertaining. One of her favorite events was the Equestrian. She thought their dancing was very impressive.
