The Eagle’s Cry recently had the opportunity to interview BHS and The Eagle’s Cry alum Joy Kim, a freshman at the United States Air Force Academy to learn about her experience so far.
TEC: How is USAFA different from the traditional college experience?
Joy: My college experience is definitely different from most of my classmates. For example, as a freshman I’m restricted on a lot of things like the amount of times I can leave and go off base to the outside world, the clothes I can wear, and the required classes I am supposed to take.
TEC: Are part of any fun extracurricular activities?
Currently, I am a competitive status member of the USAFA Marathon Club.
Joy: How did you get through cadet training? Basic Cadet Training definitely got overwhelming at certain points and I failed a lot through it because it was meant for me to fail in order to become a better cadet
TEC: Do you have fun/ allowed off campus at all?
Joy: During BCT I was only allowed off campus twice and one of those times was to see a rodeo.
TEC: Is the food yummy?
Joy: The food here was so yummy at first that i gained about 10 pounds over the course of basic but now the food has gotten bland but i appreciate that I’m getting fed for free.
TEC: How different is Colorado from NY?
Joy: A lot more mountains not enough beaches but the sunset/sunrises are beautiful
TEC: Do you have any tips/tricks for students interested in following a similar path?
Joy: Get involved in high school extracurriculars and leadership roles. Overall be a good person morally
TEC: What are some good ways to keep in touch with your family and friends while your away from home?
Joy: During basic my phone got taken away so my only source of communication was through mail but I tried to write every single day to a new person
TEC: We miss you here at The Eagle’s Cry, any story recommendations?
Joy: I would love to see a story about what BHS teachers did over the summer !
