Every year on the first day of school, the incoming Bethpage High School seniors meet up at Tobay Beach to watch the sun come up for “Senior Sunrise.” This tradition isn’t only limited to Bethpage students; instead, many schools all across Long Island participate. Contrary to Bethpage, some schools, such as Plainege and Syosset, watch the sunrise from their own school fields. Senior sunrise is a great way to kick off the school year and get people excited for their final year at BHS.
The Eagle’s Cry interviewed 2 seniors at BHS on their opinion on this activity.
TEC: What was your favorite part about senior sunrise?
Katie O’Callaghan: “I loved being able to experience it with my whole grade.”
Madison Lewin: “I loved actually watching the sunrise with my friends. It was so pretty.”
TEC: What time did you have to wake up to get ready to go to the beach? Do you think we had to be at the beach too early?
Both Katie and Madison woke up at 4 a.m and felt that it was necessary to wake up that early so they could have time to get ready for school after.
TEC:Would you rather have everyone meet at Tobay beach or on the field?
Katie and Madison agreed yet again. They both decided that the beach is more ideal because you get the full effect of the sunrise. They described the field as “boring”.
TEC: What are some of the other traditions that you are excited to partake in your senior year?
Katie O’Callaghan: “I am excited for senior sunset on the last day of school because it brings everyone together at the end of the year like how we did in the beginning of the year.”
Madison Lewin:”I can’t wait for Senior assasin. I see it every year and it looks so fun.”
With the end of our students’ high school careers ending, senior sunrise and other traditions at Bethpage High School make the final year something to look forward to instead of something to be scared about. The Eagles Cry hopes all seniors have the best last year at BHS!
