Bethpage High School offers a wide variety of courses, from AP to regents and electives. There truly is something for everyone at Bethpage. In no particular order, here are BHS student’s favorite electives.
5. Enduring Issues in Film
Mr. McCoy teaches this extremely popular class. Students watch Historical films and identify multiple enduring issues. The class watches and analyzes classic movies such as Forrest Gump, Slumdog Millionaire, and Patriots Day, just to name a few.
Eva Neamonitis shared,“This class was so fun and I loved watching movies.”
4. Creative Writing
Do you enjoy writing? Do you want to express yourself? Ms. Whalen’s class allows students the opportunity to write poems, short stories, narrative pieces, and be published in the literary magazine.
Student Haley Flaherty shares, “It’s really nice and rewarding to be able to submit my work into the Literary Magazine throughout the year.”

3. Home Improvement and Repair
Home Improvement and Repair is the newest course at BHS offers students hands-on real-life experience. The students learn how to safely utilize tools such as electric wiring, heating and cooling, roof and gutter repair, and more. This course exposes students to various real-life problems that can aid them in future jobs.
Student, Joe Ellinger shares his perspective of the class,“I was enthusiastic to use power tools and I’m very ecstatic to use tools everyday.”
2. Wordplay
In Wordplay, having fun with words is inevitable. Taught by Mr. Malossi, students expand their word knowledge by playing word games, puzzles, and watching movies/documentaries such as Akeelah and the Bee and WordWars. The class also had a spelling bee! My favorite activity in Wordplay is doing word searches. Wordplay is a fun and great way to expand your vocabulary while having fun.
- Journalism
Although this may sound biased, Journalism is by far the best elective class at BHS. Students express their ideas and unfi;tered opinions on The Eagle’s Cry. The class enjoys writing stories and covering school events in a collaborative and relaxed environment.
Our very own advisor, Mr. Malossi encourages students to, “Come check out Room 108, 5th period, Day 1, to see the top rated elective for yourself!”
