This reporter’s many stories with The Eagle’s Cry have included many interviews…but few Teacher Spotlights.
This year, The Eagle’s Cry wanted to learn more about teachers we hasn’t explored in the past. Mr. Walsh is a math teacher here at BHS. He often tries to make something as complex as Pre-Calculus fun and puts real effort into his teaching.
The Eagle’s Cry sat down with Mr. Walsh and asked him some questions:
The Eagle’s Cry: “What courses do you teach?”
“I am currently teaching three classes: Algebra I, Geometry, and a Pre-Calculus class.”
The Eagle’s Cry: “How long have you been teaching at BHS?”
“I have been teaching here at Bethpage for just under four years now, and I started teaching here in January of 2020.”
The Eagle’s Cry: “You’ve mentioned a few times that you went to school at BHS, how has the school changed since you went here?”
“Some of the major changes in the school since I was a student here are the technological advances such as the new SmartBoards, and the addition of Air Conditioning in every room which is a personal favorite of mine!”
The Eagle’s Cry: “What job would you want to be doing if you weren’t a teacher?”
“If I were not a teacher, I would probably work in Sports Marketing or in a Sports Information Department (SID) at a College. When I attended SUNY Old Westbury, I worked in the SID department when I wasn’t in Baseball season. I designed and maintained the Athletics website while also writing up game recaps of Basketball, Soccer, and Volleyball games.”
The Eagle’s Cry: “If you could eat dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would that be?”
“I would want to have dinner with Morgan Wallen because he is my favorite country singer, and I am a huge country music fan. I have always been really interested in how these artists started off singing at local concerts for a handful of people, and how they worked their way up to selling out football stadiums!”
The Eagle’s Cry: “What is a hobby you enjoy doing outside of teaching?”
“I love to play and coach baseball outside of school. I also love going to the gym and working out!”
The Eagle’s Cry: “Are you a big fan of any major league/college sports teams?”
“I am a huge sports fan. My favorite teams are the Mets, Giants, Knicks, and Rangers; and my favorite college team is Oklahoma.”
The Eagle’s Cry: “Along with that, what has been your favorite sport to coach?”
“As I mentioned before, my favorite sport to coach is Baseball. My first year coaching the Varsity Team with Mr. Fisher, we won the County Championship, and we are working tirelessly to get back to that this year!”
The Eagle’s Cry: “What’s the best advice you ever received?”
“The best advice I ever received is that nothing will be just handed to you, and you must work hard to accomplish your goals. This relates to both academics and athletics because everything in life requires you to make mistakes, and learn from them in order to become the best version of yourself.”
