A Crisis in Musicland—At Least to Me…The PARAMORE BREAKUP

On December 14th, I was crushed by a piece of terrible news: Paramore’s Jeremy Davis had left the band.

Here is the official (tragic) statement, which was posted on Paramore’s Tumblr, and also Facebook:

These last few years have held some of the most fulfilling moments we’ve had yet… as people, as friends, and as a band. The Self-Titled era was one that we knew would be important for us but also one we’d eventually have to move on from. In moving forward, there is growth, pain, and change… and sometimes the change is not at all what you hoped for. We’ve written and re-written this countless times and there’s just not a good way to put it… Jeremy is no longer going to be in the band with us. To be honest, this has been really painful. After taking time to consider how to move forward, we ultimately found that we really do believe Paramore can and should continue on. And so we will.

We’re really thankful for the people who have helped see us through hard times before and what we’ve discovered is that those people are just as much a part of this as we will ever be. We’re hopeful for Paramore’s future and we’re also excited for what Jeremy’s going to do next. Thank you all for your support and your belief in us. It’s kept us going. We will see some of you really soon on Parahoy. If you’re not coming on the cruise, we will still see you in 2016.

Davis was one of the original members of Paramore, even though he has left once before —immediately before the first album was released—hence why there is a shadow of a person sitting on the couch of that album cover. Now that he has left a second time, Paramore is left with only two members: Hayley Williams and Taylor York.

Besides Davis, this band has a history of members departing. In 2010, Josh and Zac Farro decided to leave after their third album, Brand New Eyes, was released.

BHS students did not react happily to the news. Sophomore Katarina Boncic said that she “was really surprised” when she heard the news (I, of course gave it to her). Junior Sam Alaimo said, “It’s heartbreaking. I don’t know if the band will ever be the same.” Sophomore Gabrielle McGlynn, like always, had her own opinion on the matter. “I’m deeply saddened” she said, “but as long as Hayley Williams is still in it, I’m okay.”

There is no clear answer as to why Davis left, but there are some speculations. Some think that maybe he wants to pursue DJing. Others think that it’s just because he’s 30, which is much older than Hayley (26), and Taylor (25), and is married with a child.

With only two members remaining, who knows what the future of Paramore holds?
