The Netflix series Gilmore Girls follows Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory Gilmore, in a small town called Stars Hollow. The town is filled with colorful characters that make the show more interesting, and charming establishments like “Luke’s” diner that set the scene for this perfect comfort show. This is my favorite show because of its cozy fall vibe, and Rory Gilmore’s romantic relationships throughout the series.
Rory’s first boyfriend, Dean Forester, is by far the worst. We liked Dean in the first season, however, in the later seasons, he had a terrible downfall. He was disrespectful to Rory, and his wife, Lindsay. Dean cheated on Lindsay with Rory, and broke her heart. Dean truly loved Rory, but he never cared about her ambitions. He told her, “I’m not going to Harvard! I could care less about Harvard.” He was very obsessive, overprotective, and overall, just not the right guy for Rory.
When Jess Mariano moved into town, Rory was still with Dean. She fell in love with him before she broke up with Dean, and even kissed him while they were still together. Jess is a bad boy, which is why he’s so likable to fans, but unlikable to the whole town. Rory sees the best and worst sides of him. He’s into the same books, music, and movies as her. They have a deeper connection than Dean and Rory ever had, but Jess wasn’t as reliable. He had problems with authority, communication, and boundaries. He left her, and he didn’t even say goodbye.
After Jess leaves Stars Hollow and Rory behind, she eventually moves on. She goes to Yale, and meets Logan Huntzberger. He’s similar to Jess, but at the same time, very different because he’s super rich, and entitled. He was a player before he met Rory, but he changed for her, and he became a very sweet and supportive boyfriend. He matched her wit, but not necessarily in the same way Jess did. While Rory is with Logan, Jess remains single, he pursues a writing career, and works on himself.
Jess improved himself emotionally, and found a place in the world while Rory lost herself. Once Jess got better, he was too good for Rory. When in the past, it was the opposite. Rory and Logan deserved each other because they are both spoiled rich kids. However, Jess deserves Rory more because he waited so long for her. He put in so much effort to better himself, more effort than Logan ever had put in for Rory, and after all that time, Jess and Rory should’ve ended up together. It’s not confirmed who Rory ended up with at the end of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life but we believe it’s Jess.
Sophomore Delilah Lasen said, “I have not finished the show yet, but I am team Jess because he treats Rory the best.”
Senior Lauren Park shared, “I love Jess because he is funny and better looking than Dean and Logan.”
